Da Artist ZNT: Closing Reception in Style!

Greetings Everyone

Here is a little glimpse into THE TRUTH PRESENTS...

On Friday November 14 I was joined by friends and community for my closing reception.

My goal for this art show was to incoporate all that is art from music to poetry and more.

It was an organic night of good energy happiness and fun.

We opened the doors at 7pm with beats by

DJ G 7

If you don't know him you should.

Ofats with the Dope Raps blessed the stage shortly after reminding us that through struggle we gain strength.

I was honored by the opportunity to meet new acquaintances. I shared more about myself as an artist along with my personal struggles.

I started this project over a year ago.  To bring  together a vision to do something new in Mission Hill and of all places JP LICKS BRIGHAM CIRCLE. It was a huge success.

When approaching the final days in preparation for my two month exhibit from October 1st to November 30th.  I lost my beloved best friend, father figure and grandfather. A battle that over came his physical being but not his spirit. It took place a few days before the installation of my show. I wasn't sure I was going to make it. It hurt to loose such a pivotal supportive person that always encourage my art and life choices. But with that remeberance of encouragement and beloved friends and family I moved forward.

Overall this would not be possible with out the hard work and collaboration of organizations and individuals to simply make it happen.

Brought to you by

I graced the mic at approximately 8:30pm and recited a poem entitled "It's Interesting"

Speaking to the collection of "Faces Series" that represents all woman of color and african decent.

"Being a woman of color is interesting

You can always tell when you’re missed

In the sweetness of a kiss

The linger of a hug

Bringing up and being a woman of color is interesting

Spinning 365 many things happen on her surface the atmosphere is one of the precursors

But there is a rumble

Within her earthly depths

Sometimes it emanates through the

Huffing of her breath

Or the river of water the falls from her eyes

Or the flow and gush of oceans from her inner thighs

When the birth of new ideas arise

Sometimes she crumbles and quakes

When faced with seasons of life and

mistakes

Being a woman of color is interesting

Learning how to bare the weight

Baby girl, daughter, lover, mother, sister aunt,

Companion and grandmother

The list of being a woman of color is interesting

Because it never

ends"

I value each and everyone of my customers!

Making Connections in Art: Hands on Experience, having fun and getting messy!

Welcome Back!

It's that time again to take a glimpse into my childrens Art Studio. I have been extremely busy helping young children create authentic hands on, creative, exploratory and sensory focused Art from the Heart!

It's always a pleasure to bump into a little one on the playground and the first thing they say to me is "I want to paint!" with a big smile on their face.

My focus in the studio since the beginning of school year has been learning the interest of my students, establishing ground rules and creating a warm, fun, loving artistic environment.

Our interest thus far have been:

All About Me
Fall
Primary Colors/Secondary Colors

The children I work with vary in age so I come up with art activities that relate to their possible abilities. I scaffold lessons and activities based on classroom dynamics, physical and cognitive ability. The children I work with are from ages 6.9 months to 5 years old.

Preschoolers explored art earlier in the year by making paper dolls that represented them. During our "All About Me" theme.

They worked with color papered that was representational of their various cutltural backgrounds as well as all the other colors of the rainbow.

We worked over a period of two weeks in which we used several materials to create paper dolls.

Week One:

Designing
Gluing
And conversations about placement of facial features and specific parts of clothing.

Week Two:

Decoration with embellished objects
Buttons
Foam shapes
Glitter
Yarn
Plastic bingo chips
Neon paints

Three completed paper doll friends.

So I know you are waiting for the fun and messy part well believe it or not this is it.

Anytime wet materials are involved i.e. Glue, Markers or any type of paint there  is opportunity for mess and fun. The above "paper doll" activities had lots of it with glue, materials and paints every which way!

Clean up is very important and should be an integral part of the process.

Cleaning up:
Dropping dirty paint brushes into the sink
Wiping down tables
Collection of unused materials
and hand washing

Does this look messy to you? Well it very well can be!

Our "Fall" themed apple prints.

Inspired by the literacy connection:

Title: Apple
Author/Illustrator: Nikki McClure

This book introduces young children to the inside of an apple and it's process from being picked to traveling through all the seasons. It even touches on gardening!

When I was a youngster which I will say was not that long ago. We used actual apples to make prints. Now it's important to be more conscious of food deserts, hunger and food conservation. In that effort I very rarely use food in the Art Studio.

This apple printing technique is used out of laminated paper shaped apples to create a "monoprint".

Children get to choose fall colored finger paints with a cornstarch base infused with shimmers of gold, bronze and silver.

This is a truly hands on messy fingerpaintng fun.
That is easy for all preschool age children.

I strongly believe children learn from modeling rather it be from a teacher or peers. Children also learn from exploration of cause and effect.

During our one week exploration lesson of color mixing.

We came across the literacy connection "Mix It Up" a fun messy book all about being interactive and hands on.

The author/illustrator is Herve Tullet. He has some amazing concept books about art. You should check him out.

Children practiced making the primary colors by drawing the matching color circles of the color wheel with markers.

Then completed the practice by coloring in the circles with tempera paint in liquid form and tempera cakes.

Children had fun exploring new terms from the story such as smudge and rub as it related to mixing colors.

We even came across patterns too.

As always I enjoy bringing art for the heart as an artist and  a educator.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into my early childhood art studio.

Until next time "Live and Let Art"!

Peace

What a Night: The Truth Presents!

Greetings Friends and Family,

This has been such an overwhelming and humbling experience. I have met so many new and amazing people interested in my craft and journey.

Friday evening October 10, 2014 started with new and familiar smiling faces and pleasant conversations.

I really do love art and at times I don't love it too, but when I do it's moments like this that make the struggle of being an artist that more tangible and real.
I am happy I was able to explain a little about my process, my professional growth and journey as an artist.

This night would not have been possible with out the support of so many amazing people.

Dj G7 who really brought the tone to the night with his music artistry on the one's and two's.

I Rose what can I say this woman's voice invokes and embodies the spirit of our ancestors.  It sent chills down my spine.

The one and only OFATS with the dope RAPS bringing in positivity and love through the story telling language of hip hop.
(Located far left!)

But of course this day would not have been possible without  collaboration

Many thanks to  everyone that supports me from patrons, friends to family.

This has been a night to remember and I can't wait to bring more opportunities like this for other artist in the community.

Enjoy a few more moments below.
